WHAT IS YACON ROOT?
OUR NOT-SO-SECRET SUPER INGREDIENT
MOVE OVER ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS!
There’s a natural alternative to sugar that actually promotes healthy blood sugar. The name of this superhero? Yacon root.
The yacon root is a species of perennial daisy that grows naturally in South America and has been part of the Andean diet for hundreds of years.
This naturally sweet, naturally low-glycemic root vegetable looks like a sweet potato, but it’s much more hydrating than its starchy counterparts. “Yacon root” literally translates to “watery root” in the Incan language, and its flavor has been compared to apples, pears and watermelons.
So what makes this delicious root vegetable such a sweet superfood? The yacon root contains an indigestible fiber known as fructooligosaccharides (FOS) or inulin. FOS is a sugar that your body can’t digest, and that’s a good thing! FOS is a form of PREbiotics, the food for all those PRObiotics in your gut. Together, PRE- and PRObiotics help you digest food, absorb nutrients, and boost your immunity during the digestion process. Pretty cool, right?
Since inulin is sweet, low-glycemic, and promotes healthy digestion, it’s safe for diabetics to eat, too. Yacon root has many natural health benefits and is used to aid digestion, prevent digestive issues, reduce cholesterol, and promote a healthy weight.
WHAT IS YACON ROOT SYRUP?
The water in the yacon root is used to create Yacon syrup, a versatile prebiotic sweetener that we use in our Rowdy Bars. Yacon syrup has a molasses-like texture and is now more widely eaten as a gut-healthy, zero-glycemic, low-calorie alternative to other common natural sweeteners like monk fruit, stevia, molasses, and maple syrup. Unlike artificial sweeteners like Aspartame, Saccharin and Sucralose, which have a bad reputation for damaging gut health, yacon syrup actually improves digestive health by feeding yourgut bacteriathe right nutrients to help your body thrive.
THE BENEFITS OF YACON ROOT
Yacon is a true wonder food! As a prebiotic, zero-glycemic, low-calorie natural sweetener, there’s plenty to love about yacon syrup! Check out all these health benefits you can enjoy just by swapping out your sweetener for yacon syrup.
ENCOURAGES A THRIVING MICROBIOME
All the good bacteria in your intestines LOVE the prebiotic elements of FOS. Probiotics in your gut can populate your gut and thrive when they have enough food (i.e prebiotics) to munch on. Plus, Yacon root is a natural mild laxative, preventing constipation and the dreaded belly bloat.
SUPPORTS A HEALTHY WEIGHT
You may have heard the buzz around yacon syrup as an ingredient for weight loss. While there’s more research needed to give it the weight loss award, studies show people feel more satiated after eating the yacon root. This is because yacon is high in fiber and low in calories, which makes it a superfood. Superfoods keep you full longer without extra calories weighing you down. Additionally, yacon syrup tastes delicious, so when you eat foods that contain yacon syrup, you don’t feel like you’re eating diet foods.
LOWERS BLOOD PRESSURE
Yacon contains loads of potassium, which balances out the negative effects of salt, specifically fluid retention. The more fluid you retain, the higher your blood pressure will be. Potassium works with your kidneys to reduce fluids and relax blood vessels, so your heart can pump without additional strain.
REGULATES BLOOD SUGAR
Yacon syrup is an awesome alternative sweetener for people watching their blood sugar levels. The prebiotic fiber in yacon syrup slows the absorption of sugars, which prevents blood sugar spikes, sugar crashes, and unhealthy blood sugar levels. The best part: you don’t have to skimp on the sweetness!
PROMOTES LIVER HEALTH
The liver regulates the body’s glucose levels and ensures blood sugar is consistent and healthy. Yacon syrup promotes healthy blood sugar, so the liver doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain healthy glucose levels. Eating yacon syrup in place of other sweeteners can prevent fatty liver and help your liver run efficiently.
REDUCES BAD CHOLESTEROL
The yacon root may also be responsible for preventing the buildup of low-density lipoprotein, or “bad” cholesterol in the arteries. FOS in yacon root lowers lipid levels in the body—the reason for high and “bad” cholesterol. Prevention of this build up can also prevent heart attack, stroke, and heart disease.
